Summary

Education is key to ensuring wild tigers have wild futures. Since 2010 we've provided 3400 education packs for children in 34 villages around Bandhavgarh to enable them to go to school. Rural poverty & the cost of basic writing materials can prevent many children going to school. Without education their future prospects are bleak, with limited employment options leading to an increased dependency upon the land & further pressure on shrinking tiger habitat. We now want to help thousands more.

Challenge

The Pandemic impacted children from the poorest rural communities more than most as they had no access to learning for over a year. Without education they risk becoming the forgotten generation. Human-animal conflict has also increased in Bandhavgarh where in 105 villages 50%+ of families have 4+ children. The educational prospects for many children are limited by their parents' poverty with many families with income under 5/$8 a week, so funding schooling for their children is impossible.

Solution

Our education packs give children a chance to improve critical literacy skills; future employment prospects & reduce their dependency on land. We work with a Bandhavgarh based NGO to deliver pop-up schooling to the poorest children who don't have access to a school. Literate children are empowered to get better jobs including those protecting tigers & their habitat, thus creating positive impacts on wildlife; reducing human-animal conflict; & discouraging future tiger poaching

Long-Term Impact

Our project provides educational resources for Bandhavgarh's poorest children when they need them most. It will help to improve children's literacy & enhance the prospect of future wild tiger survival. Educated families have fewer children which also reduces the dependency on scarce forest resources & the need for land for crop growing. We buy educational resources are locally in Bandhavgarh to support the community interdependencies on wild tiger survival & foster a positive attitude to tigers.
