Greetings from Bethany Society, Meghalaya, India!

This is to once again acknowledge the enabling support of everyone who has supported and championed our cause of empowering children and young persons belonging to vulnerable and marginalized communities enjoy a fulness of being.

March 2019 marked the beginning of the new academic session for most of our children and young people living in Divine Flame hostels for independent living. The last three months (March-May 2019) have been vibrant, vivid and have set the tone for the year to follow.

The period has seen the children and young people living in Divine Flame Hostels for Independent Living (A Unit of Bethany Society) celebrate the "Hostel Week 2019" which drew massive interest and participation from all the children/ young people and the staff alike. The students with the vitalizing support of the hostel wardens organized the spectacle on their own which included a wide range of events/activities. Nearly all children participated in one or more activities.

Besides, on the academic front, 26 students from Jyoti Sroat School (A Unit of Bethany Society) successfully passed their secondary and higher secondary state board examinations. Out of the 26 successful students, 17 were persons with disabilities who accomplished varying levels of personal success.

Though there's still a long way to go, we acknowledge the current progress being made w.r.t our programme. This is indeed promising and encouraging and together with our supporters and well-wishers, we shall continue to surge ahead with relentless focus. #Inclusion

Your support enabled us: Major Highlights

Dear all,

Hey There, Superheros! Greetings from Bethany Society, Meghalaya, India

First up, we would like to acknowledge your valuable and vitalizing contribution towards enabling a child to achieve their entitled right to lead a “Life with Dignity”. The Bethany Society family expresses our warmest appreciation and sincere gratitude to you for this admirable deed of supporting the education and rehabilitation of children and young people with disabilities for six months (October 2018 – March 2019).

Owing to your enabling support, we have been able to further the cause of our prodigious children and young people. Over the course of the last six months, 45 of our students have been connected to direct individual sponsors (both from India and abroad) for complete or partial support for their education and accommodation (for six months duration; October 2018- March 2019). The last six months were also historically significant for us as we celebrated the Silver Jubilee of our inclusive school, thus commemorating the 25 years of its relentless service to the communities of Meghalaya and Northeast India in the field of education. The Silver Jubilee was also dedicated to celebrating our unique abilities and diversity through an inclusive talent show where the students showcased their inherent talents.

Besides, the achievements of some of our students were inspirational in the field of science and performing arts both at the local and state levels. Moreover, 28 of our students are currently appearing for their Higher Secondary (10+2) and Secondary (10) school leaving examinations (Please find attached the detailed report summarizing the major highlights and achievements of the last six months).

All in all, these milestones coupled with your encouraging support inspires us further to continue working relentlessly towards furthering the cause of promoting an inclusive, barrier-free, rights-based society wherein everyone enjoys a fullness of being.

Greetings from Bethany Society, Meghalaya, India.

Firstly, we express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported our cause of "Educating & Rehabilitating children with Disability in Meghalaya, India". Owing to your genuine concern and enabling contributions, we are now able to take further significant steps in advancing our children's personal and professional prospects. Bethany Society dreams of a world where all enjoy a fullness of being and therefore we are committed to creating opportunities for independent living particularly for persons with disability and the rural/urban poor through Inclusive Education, Sustainable Livelihoods, & Social Inclusion.

Our concerned programme focusses on providing residential facilities in hostels to children and young people with disability who belong to deprived and marginalized backgrounds, while also providing them of an opportunity to pursue, education or skill-development in an Inclusive setup.

Students residing in the hostel can avail of educational, vocational and rehabilitation facilities that are available around the hostels, but these particular services are not supported by the project itself. The hostels are located in Tebrongre, Rongram Block, W. Garo Hills District and Shillong, East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, India and there are separate hostels for boys and girls. The program is cross-disability and the clients avail of opportunities that are either on campus or in campuses close to the hostel. On behalf of the Governing Body of Bethany Society a committee headed by a member of the Governing Body looks after the management of the hostels. The programme is partially supported by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India.

PWDS avail of formal and non-formal education programmes and sustainable livelihoods training

Services Offered:

The hostels are open from February to December. But facilities are also made available in the vacation period of January, for students who wish to study for various examinations. Programmes in the hostels aim to create opportunities for young people with disability and emphasis is given to:

Independent Living
Total Communication
Community Living
Community Work
Games & Hobbies
Prayer, meditation and value education
Opportunities for education and rehabilitation
Interaction with the local community
Developing partnerships with other institutions
Life skills training
Special tuition classes
Music
Indoor and outdoor games
Career Counselling

Students undergoing formal education are supported for higher studies as per need.

Students in livelihood training are supported for micro-enterprise development and credit linkage.

152 completed programmes

Parents are encouraged to visit their children as often as possible and to take them home for short holidays. Counselling services are available for all students.
