Primary Education Programs in Mali Ouelessebougou Alliance – Donor Report Education as a Pathway Out of Poverty
At Ouelessebougou Alliance, education is at the heart of everything we do. We believe education is one of the most effective and sustainable ways to break the cycle of poverty and create long-term change for families and communities. By investing in primary education, we are not only supporting individual children, but also strengthening entire villages and shaping a more stable future for Mali.
Program Overview and Impact
Through our Primary Education Programs, Ouelessebougou Alliance currently supports 12 schools across the Ouelessebougou region of Mali. These schools serve nearly 2,600 students, including almost 1,200 girls. In communities where access to education is often limited by distance, poverty, and insecurity, our schools provide a safe, consistent learning environment where children can grow academically and personally.
Gender equity remains a core priority of our education work. Girls in rural Mali face significant barriers to education, including early marriage, household labor responsibilities, and lack of resources. By prioritizing enrollment, retention, and support for girls, we are helping ensure that young women have the opportunity to complete their education and pursue brighter futures for themselves and their families.
Improving Learning Environments
In addition to supporting teachers, students, and school operations, Ouelessebougou Alliance continues to invest in school infrastructure to improve learning conditions. This year, we are proud to share that we completed construction on three new classrooms in the village of Djemene.
These new classrooms address overcrowding and provide students with a safer, more conducive learning environment. With adequate classroom space, teachers are better able to engage students, manage lessons effectively, and support learning outcomes. For students, improved facilities mean greater comfort, dignity, and motivation to attend school consistently.
Looking Ahead
While we are encouraged by the progress being made, the need for quality primary education in Mali remains significant. Population growth, economic hardship, and ongoing regional instability continue to strain existing resources. Ouelessebougou Alliance remains committed to expanding access to education, improving school quality, and ensuring that both boys and girls have the tools they need to succeed.
