This project will provide enjoyable and meaningful learning experience to 160 out of school slum children in Delhi .These children are forced to miss regular school as they work as rag pickers, street vendors or help at roadside eateries to meet their family's economic needs .Many of them stay at home to take care of their younger siblings and do household chores so that their parents can work to support the family. The project will also provide periodic health check ups of children.
Delhi is home to over 50,000 street and working children. This project aims at educating street working children who are poor & work as rag pickers, street vendors etc.to contribute to family income. It also targets children who are not enrolled in schools as they take up responsibility for household chores or sibling care, and those who drop out of school due to sickness, migration, relocation of slums or inability to keep up with school pressures. The project will benefit 160 children.
Out of school children are identified after house to house surveys in slums. Parents are motivated to enroll their children in learning centers and send them to attend daily classes based on a flexible time table. Children are provided non formal education along with life skills education sessions on peer pressure, conflict resolution ,sexual abuse, friendship etc. Creativity workshops on art ,craft and music are conducted along with computer classes and children are admitted back into school.
The program tries to break the cycle of poverty in India caused by the lack of education and health services available for population living in slums. If underprivileged kids manage to get back into mainstream education thanks to our project, they will have the opportunity of finding proper jobs and when they become parents they will not have to send their own kids to work on streets for surviving on a daily basis. The whole of Indian society and future generations will benefit from this.
