04 Children obtain computer literacy skills

By Jeremy Issac | Assistant Manager Donor Relations

Sahaara believes that every person has a dream, and our work centers around ensuring that marginalized persons are able to articulate and work towards achieving their dream. Children living in Mumbai juvenile homes are one of the most marginalized children in Mumbai. Institutionalized, these children are most often from highly poverty stricken families.

As a part of the holistic intervention therein, Sahaara imparts computer education to the children between fourteen to eighteen years of age in the juvenile homes. Sahaara’s in- house computer course delivers a fitting foundation to the children preparing their skills for the technology-driven world outside the homes. The children attending the computer training get a start which will help them break out of the poverty cycle and fulfill their dreams of a stablefuture.

Below is the story of a child who has benefited by the MS-CIT course conducted by Sahaara.

Rohit* had dream that one day he wanted to sit in front of computer and work in a big company that pays him a good salary. Although he had big dreams, he couldn’t accomplish his dreams because his father died when he was very young. His mother worked as a housemaid and would earn very little to feed him, his elder brother and his younger sister. His dream was torn apart when his mother put him and his elder brother in Chembur Children’s Home (CCH) and his younger sister in Bal Kalyan Nagari (BKN) as she didn’t have enough money to raise the three of her children on her own.

When Rohit was in CCH in the 11th standard, he learned of the MS-CIT courses offered by Sahaara to the children of CCH. He reached out to the Sahaara staff, where he showed interested in learning computers. We got to know about his dream to learn computers and work in a reputed company. So, we enrolled him for the MS-CIT course. Initially he found it difficult to understand the course and couldn’t cope up. But with some amount of counselling and help he managed to clear his MS-CIT course and scored 76% in his tests.

He is very grateful to Sahaara for the opportunity he received and ability to finally be able to work towards his dream and passion of learning computers. He hopes to one day get a job working with computers in a reputed company.
