20 Children Obtain Computer Literacy Skills!

By Rahul Thomas | Head of Operations - Programs

Sahaara believes that every person has a dream and our work centres around ensuring that marginalized persons can articulate and work towards achieving their dream. Children living in Mumbai juvenile homes are one of the most marginalized children in the city. Institutionalized, these children are most often from highly poverty-stricken families.

As a part of the holistic intervention therein, Sahaara imparts computer education to the children between fourteen to eighteen years of age in the juvenile homes. Sahaara’s in- house computer course delivers a fitting foundation to the children preparing their skills for the technology-driven world outside the homes. The children attending computer training get a start which will help them break out of the poverty cycle and fulfil their dreams of a stable future.

During the reporting period of January to March 2019, 20 children attended the computer course.

Below is the story of a child who has benefited with the help of the computer training carried out by Sahaara personnel.

Vipul*, an 18-year-old boy, was again arrested for having fights and was kept under the judicial custody of Bhiwandi, Thane. He was kept there for 2 ½ years and then transferred to the DSIS home, Matunga. When he had joined the Sahaara class he was totally confused about his future. It has been now 6 months since he has been in the DSIS home.

At the DSIS home he was encouraged to join the computer class conducted by Sahaara. He was enrolled and given personal attention. He was taught MS word, excel and PowerPoint in the Sahaara computer literacy course. He has since made progress in learning MS office. He understands the importance and advantages of learning computers.

Vipul is regular and punctual in every computer session. He has learned to help and guide other children during the class. He has learned to dress neatly and tidily and maintains a good hygiene. He likes to make friends and enjoys playing games. He is interested in the English subject. Teachers have counseled him and given him a hope of moving ahead in life. He really benefitted from the career guidance counseling conducted by Sahaara.

Vipul will be will be released from the home soon. He has promised to continue his studies and will appear for his SSC exams.
