This project aims to ensure that rural tribal children in Udaipur District, Rajasthan are able to receive a solid education, providing them with the skills they need to succeed in life. It will work through a 3-pronged approach, enrolling children in school and reducing instances of child labor, ensuring that children can easily get to school through providing escorts in remote areas, and ensuring children remain in school through holding school fairs and constructing sanitation facilities.
In the tribal areas of Udaipur District, Rajasthan, school attendance is very low. There is a lack of belief in the education system from parents, who often feel that having their children work is a better investment. Schools are also often difficult or dangerous to reach for young children on their own. Finally, a lack of working toilet facilities in the vast majority of schools makes the situation particularly difficult for girls, resulting in high dropout rates for girls reaching adolescence.
We will ensure that children are enrolled in school by holding enrolment drives and supporting village committees that work to remove children from labor. We will also ensure that children can attend school by providing escorts to those in remote areas. Finally, we will ensure that children remain in school by holding fairs that help increase interest in education, and by building toilets and sanitation facilities, which reduce illness rates and remove a major obstacle in the education of girls.
As a result of this project, the number of children attending school will be significantly higher, particularly in the case of girls. Communities will also have a better understanding of the importance of education and the negative impacts of child labour. Furthermore, children will have a strong understanding of hygiene and sanitation practices, which they will disseminate in their villages, resulting in lower levels of illness for both adults and children.
