ARRC supports a Community Centre in the disadvantaged area of Selwane, located in the NE of South Africa. This centre serves as a crucial lifeline for many, particularly offering a safe and social after-school environment for underprivileged and orphaned children aged 4 to 18, as well as for older residents. While the potential to improve lives is boundless, our primary focus is on delivering education in animal welfare and wildlife conservation, along with providing a healthy, balanced hot meal
Selwane is a disadvantaged community bordering the Greater Kruger, an area rich in wildlife. Despite their proximity, many residents, including the elderly, have never had encounters with animals, and many children have travelled only a few kilometres from their homes. There is a significant lack of understanding, respect, and general knowledge about conservation and the environment. Unfortunately, illegal poaching is common and practiced regularly.
We believe that education for all ages, has the power to cultivate community pride and responsibility of the immediate surroundings and beyond. By offering a first hand experience of South Africa's environment, wildlife, and diverse flora and fauna through a unique bush camp, we aim to inspire. Ongoing learning and reading resources support the continuity of the project. Providing a hot, nutritious meal, which could possibly be their only one of the day, greatly supports health and well-being.
Our goal is to inform, engage, and expand the perspectives of this proud and unique community. We aim to inspire them to contribute to the preservation of their natural heritage. Through education, support, and alternative job opportunities, we seek to break the cycle of high unemployment. By empowering individuals to make a meaningful impact, we hope to improve their lives, benefit future generations, and reduce the incentives for illegal poaching activities.
