The Uweza Sponsorship Program currently provides academic scholarships to 65 primary, secondary, and college/university students from Kibera. The scholarship equips students with resources (school fees, school uniforms, textbooks) as well as guidance and mentorship to ensure that they can stay in school and access a quality education. Our scholars are selected on the basis of their home and family situation and their academic potential and attend schools throughout Kenya.
Education is extremely important to Kibera families, who recognize its potential to lift students out of poverty. At the same time, the cost of a quality education for even one student can be several times a family's monthly income, forcing bright and determined students to miss days or weeks of school at a time or drop out early. Due to the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, more families than ever in Kibera are struggling to afford education.
Uweza provides academic scholarships to students participating in our programs on the basis of home situation and academic performance, ensuring that these can attend good quality schools and that they are never sent out of school due to non-payment of school fees. In addition, we provide scholarship recipients with mentorship, life skills education and guidance so that they can reach their full potential and follow their dreams.
The current generation of students are the future of Kenya and the education that they receive will affect all aspects of their life, including their employment prospects, earnings potential, and health outcomes. When more students are able to access high-quality education, there is a ripple effect that will reach their families, their community, and their country.
