The first Casita in Huaycan was founded in December 1994: 21 years ago! It was about time for a group of funders to get back in Huaycan and meet the first generation of children grown around the casita de los ninos.
It was a wonderful party, where former children now young adults have gathered to remember the old days, when they first arrived in the classrooms and found tutors taking care of them, nutritious meals, many games to play, ... and Maria, the relentless general manager, always around with a comb in her hands, looking for lice in their scalps.
These kids have actually become a class of adults with other opportunities than those they could ever expect.
We can't count Nobel prizes but we have small traders, mechanics, cooks, nurses and accountants ... and most of all, loving and responsible parents, who will work hard to let their children grow safe and sound. Beyond the indispensable figures and performance indicators, in Huaycan we may meet and greet and hug real people who embody the results and the actual meaning of all our work.
Sure it was a wonderful party, and we plan to have another with the next generation of kids growing around our Casita.
Will you be there with us?
