"If you had the absolute power, what would you do today?"
Move everything in the R zone
This is the answer Maria Vivas, our local project manager in Huaycan, gave to a question while carrying out a needs assessment.
Huaycan is a recently formed and constantly changing site: in the areas closer to Lima, where paved roads, public transportation and utilities are provided, average economic family status has improved. A shower, going shopping or to school, jumping on a bus to to reach one's workplace is now dramatically easier than 20 years ago.
In more remote areas, which are now populating with the latest arrivals either from the sierra or the countryside, people live in shacks made of recycled materials, on plots of land perched on steep hills.
No roads, nor water, sewage or electricity. Even the simplest gestures of daily living, such as washing hands, become difficult.
This is the R area in Huaycan, where our project is consolidating one of its facilities, and where Maria, as well as the rest of the staff, believes that we need to be more and more assiduous.
In the coming months, we will complete the transfer of our own services in that area.
We shall not abandon those who still need our help in the G area: our staff has the talent of finding individual solutions to specific needs.
Still, we will concentrate resources and efforts in our classrooms "arriba" (above), which soon will expand to accommodate more children in the R area.
Follow us in this moving, by supporting us and by keeping in touch: more and exciting news are coming from Huaycan.
