Summary

This Project started out as an early education and a feeding program for destitute children in a slum colony situated in Sangrur, Punjab State. The Project builds on work started in 2022 by Mrs Sonia Pankaj, a qualified teacher who feeds and teaches about 25-30 children in a makeshift classroom. The project has now relocated to Madhya Pradesh to serve 100 poor children in Jabalpur and Bhopal by providing meals and other essentials to empower and enable them attend school with dignity.

Challenge

Discrimination, poverty and hunger with its related aliments keep approximately 100 poor slum children aged between 2 and 13 years away from school. Two local public schools have agreed to register the older ones but insist that the children should attend classes at the slum and not at the public schools. The children with no access to public education are stuck in the slum colony to fend for themselves as their parents go to the city to either beg or collect recyclable items from the city bins.

Solution

The Project will impact and change the lives of at least 100 poor children from slum colony by providing tools necessary for them to access education. Donations made to this Project will be used to rent suitable premises to be used for classrooms, play areas, and provide the children with breakfast and lunch and most importantly, an education. Donations will also pay for two teachers and one support staff. Future plans include building a boarding house and education facility for the children.

Long-Term Impact

A warm breakfast will encourage the 100 slum children to attend classes and greatly improve their ability to concentrate. The prospect of a nutritious lunch will encourage them to stay for the hours of study. This feeding program will develop the health and well-being of the children enabling them to focus on school activities. Ultimately this project will provide a good education foundation which will help them break the cycle of poverty and improve their lives and their community.
