Challenge

About 750,000 of Nairobi slum residents are aged 10-24 years. Often, they suffer from extreme poverty, school dropout, early marriage, teenage pregnancies, illiteracy, sexual and gender-based violence, and lack of access to essential services. Adolescent girls and young mothers have slim or no chances of transitioning to a higher level of education even though access to education is a fundamental human right. This project will enable 150 vulnerable girls in Kenya's slums to acquire an education

Solution

Education Empowerment for Slum Adolescents (EESA) will pay tuition fee for 50 underserved adolescent girls transitioning to high school and set up a centre that will provide infrastructure and scholarships to train young mothers for free in Hairdressing and Beauty, computer packages, nail therapy, housekeeping and counseling skills. These teen mothers will be taken through mentorship, communication skills, and entrepreneurship. Their babies have a safe space to play while their mothers learn.

Long-Term Impact

The project will educate 50 vulnerable adolescent girls and 100 young mothers empowering them with the necessary knowledge and skills to close the poverty gap and also address gender inequities Following successful training, HKSAI will work with potential employers to secure job opportunities for the cohort. HKSAI will provide young women entrepreneurs with the technical required for business start-ups.
