Chilean National Parks are places of magnificient beauty and home of diverse species. Unfortunately, they are in danger: the lack of financing and complex institutions raise the urgency of a change. Through this project of public education Amigos de los Parques aims to inspire and promote a culture of appreciation of National Parks. Through content generation, a series of lectures and exhibitions, we will promote a generation that values biodiversity and a sense of belonging with natural life.
National Parks guarantee ecosystemic protection on a large scale, they are essential to halt the species extinction crisis, mitigate climate change and maintain the natural processes that shape diversity of life on Earth. Chile has 41 National Parks but they are in danger. The lack of financing and a complex institutional framework does not allow effective conservation. Chile needs to promote and magnify the public value of National Parks and foster the role of people in their protection.
In Chile, there is not public knowledge about protected areas and their effective mission to halt species extinction. This public education campaign is part of a cultural transformation, a change of paradigm, which knowingly is a long-term task, it should start as soon as possible.
As the Norwegian philosopher Arne Naess puts it, the "front is long". All the changes necessary to mobilize people towards harmony with the rest of the species, with life, takes time. We must start today.
