Thanks to many donors (especially the Good Shepherd Church in Cincinnati, OH), in 2012 Shoulder to Shoulder built an elementary bilingual school. We wanted it to be a community school, open to all students. However, private school tuition is out of the reach of the majority of people in the mountains of Honduras. So we partnered with the Department of Education, and our school became the first (and only) public bilingual elementary school in Honduras.
There are 150 students in the school. The Dept of Education will only pay the salaries of 4 bilingual teachers; they want each teacher to teach a combined classroom of two grades. The Parents’ Association and StS do not agree with this and instead we split the costs of hiring 3 additional teachers each year.
Parents pay a monthly fee of $15 for their children to attend school -- which is paid directly to the Parents’ Association. Besides the teachers, the Dept of Education provides no other funding. The Parents’ Assoc and StS provide everything else. StS invests approximately $30,000 per year in the school.
Many children in Honduras end their schooling when they complete 6th grade. StS made an agreement with the local public Middle/Sr High School. StS hires a teacher to provide advanced English lessons to the students either before, or after, school. The parents continue to pay their monthly fee, and those funds go to the Parents’ Assoc, to match StS' funds to pay the teacher.
Our scholarship program makes dreams come true by providing school uniforms; school materials; and funds for lunches and transportation for 150 needy students. StS invests approximately $35,000 per year for this program. Without this help, many of these students would end their education after 6th grade.
