We are pleased to update you all on the activities and progress of Goals for Peace. This has been made possible through the funds we received from the GlobalGiving Campaign and your generous donation.
Through supervised homework club, we remain committed to learning.
The homework club has demonstrated great effectiveness in the development of children. We recognize the great challenges that are being presented, partly because the years of study in "virtual mode" were not effective in learning. In the case of our participants we attribute the lack of effectiveness mainly to the lack of internet and I.T. access. Also the lack of parental commitment, or not having the knowledge or tools for such academic support.
Therefore, the challenge is greater than before the pandemic. We have children without strong knowledge of the subjects they are facing in the grade they are currently studying. Homework advice is vital for understanding, learning and correcting performance.
In the last quarter the number of attendees has increased and we can highlight special case. As is the case of Valeria a girl of only 9 years old who arrives very punctually every day to do her homework, or else to review the topics covered in class. The constant support and encouragement helps motivate her to continue in her studies and strive to be the best in her class.
Training workshops
The events of recent years have taught us the great importance of taking care of our mental health, how important it is to know each other, learn from our feelings, the importance of values and community life.
The training workshops focus on teaching values and through playful workshops put them into practice, we want to teach them critical thinking, with good self-knowledge and the power to work towards constant positive changes that allow improving the difficult environments they find themselves in.
One of the problems that is identified in the participants is aggressive behavior that is partly a reflection of the environment in which they live (low income neighborhoods with gang related problems). This is one of the problems that we address through structured games that allow children to explore better self-control and handling of negative situations.
The playful didactic workshops have a positive reflective impact that is evident in changes in behavior, we highlight the case of Cristian a 12-year-old boy with a difficult family environment who has substantially modified his misbehavior in front of his peers, even reducing in recent months the calls for attention from his school.
Sports training for life.
The majority of the participants have a great passion for sports, especially soccer. There are many talented boys and girls who enjoy the safe spaces we provide for training and practicing sports.
Sports training is focused not only on strengthening and improving skills with the ball, but also on compliance with adapted rules where values, fair play and teamwork are paramount.
After training, the participants enjoy mixed matches where females play an important role in the team. Coaches also have an important role, always highlighting the importance of values on the playing field. Coaches should also provide inspiration to overcome challenges, and reinforce the commitment to fair play.
For this report we want to share with you the story of Fernando, an 11-year-old boy, who has had problems with being overweight, which is why he had never felt safe practicing any sport before. In recent months has discovered his love for sports, especially football. Currently Fernando attends training with great enthusiasm and in recent months he has shown great progress in his motor skills, and his ability to maneuver the ball. He has also lost weight and we are happy to see his desire, happiness and satisfaction for what he has accomplished. Like Fernando, we hope more children will shake off their fears and see the positive impact of physical activity.
