Report on the Challenges of Online Fundraising
Introduction
The “Education and Reintegration of Young Mothers” project in the Democratic Republic of Congo aims to provide educational opportunities and reintegration programs for young mothers. Despite efforts to raise funds on GlobalGiving.org, several challenges have been encountered.
Challenges encountered
1. Visibility and Competition:
- Many projects on GlobalGiving create increased competition for donors' attention. It is difficult to stand out, especially when other projects attract more visibility.
2. Awareness and Communication:
- The difficulty in reaching a wide and engaged audience has limited donation opportunities. Communication campaigns are often insufficient to raise awareness about the importance of the project and attract potential donors.
3. Understanding of the Project:
- Potential donors may not fully understand the specific challenges faced by young mothers in the DRC, which reduces their motivation to contribute.
4. Payment Mechanisms:
- Difficulties related to payment methods can discourage donors. The available payment options, particularly those involving credit cards, often pose problems. Indeed, cards issued by banks in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the majority of our donors are located, may be unsuitable or encounter technical complications, which hinders the donation process.
- Payment confirmation occurs after online validation, accompanied by a confirmation message sent to the donor's bank, while the funds have not yet arrived in GlobalGiving's account.
5. Trust and Transparency:
- Concerns about transparency and fund management can discourage donations. Donors often seek evidence of project impact before committing financially.
6. Long-Term Commitment:
- One-off campaigns may not be sufficient to generate sustainable financial support. The lack of long-term commitment from donors limits the project's ability to plan and expand its initiatives.
7. Feedback and Reporting:
- In addition, the lack of an increase in online funds, the lack of regular feedback on the funds raised, and reminders to donors whose credit cards have been rejected by the payment system can lead to a loss of interest on the part of donors.
Conclusion
The online fundraising campaign for the “Education and Reintegration of Young Mothers” project encountered several obstacles. To improve future results, it will be essential to develop more targeted awareness strategies with GlobalGiving, diversify payment options, and strengthen transparency and donor engagement.
Recommendations
- Improve Communication Strategy: Develop more impactful communication campaigns that highlight the stories of beneficiaries.
- Strengthen Online Presence: Use social media and partnerships with influencers to increase visibility.
- Offer More Payment Options: Evaluate and integrate more accessible payment methods.
- Postpone the launch of the project: Despite receiving US$37 in Congolese francs, this amount is insufficient to launch the first phase. In order to reach the expected funds, we have decided to postpone the launch.
- Create Feedback Channels: Set up regular reporting systems to inform donors of the impact of their contributions.
By working on these areas, we hope to overcome the current difficulties and ensure the sustainability of the project.
