Schools Due to Open after 7 Months COVID Lockdown

By Andrew Martin Niwagaba | Project Leader

Warm greetings to all our donors, friends and well-wishers. Wherever you are, I hope you are well and keeping safe from the COVID 19 Pandemic.

As you might be aware by now, Schools in Uganda have been closed since mid-March 2020 due to the COVID 19 pandemic. After 7 months of the COVID 19 lockdown, schools in Uganda are set to open on the 15/10/2020 for candidate classes. The rest of the children other than the finalists or candidates will stay home until the government of Uganda pronounces itself on the issue. We are excited about the news of the re-opening of schools given that the Four candidates in Primary Seven and One candidate in Senior Four (Ordinary level) are expected to report for school. The challenge with this development however is that the school fees pressure is back on the urgent to-do list. We have school fees arrears from the third school term of 2019 to the first school term of 2020. No amount was paid at the beginning of the year except for Joseph who was joining the secondary school for the first time.

Apparently, the new term will be the second school term of the year. The communication from the schools (circulars) has stresses/emphasizes the need to have paid all the school fees balances from 2019 and the first school term of 2020. The expectation is that we would have to prepare to deal with the second term school fees too. This has left us in an awkward situation. The reporting to school by our candidates remains in balance. This is further complicated by the need to provide for food and other home and scholarly essentials. We are hopeful that with your help and support, we will be able to deliver on the promise to these children. I hope that you are able to continue supporting the project so that the children re able to go to school. Knowledge is power and the future depends on it.
