CHILDREN IN OUR SURROUNDING NEIGHBOURHOOD
CHILDREN IN OUR SURROUNDING NEIGHBOURHOOD

Dear Friends,

June 1st was Madaraka Day which commemorates the day that Kenya attained internal self-rule in 1963.
We took the opportunity on this public holiday to visit families in our surrounding community.
It's always shocking and deeply disturbing to witness the living conditions of some of our neighbors who live in abject poverty. We found babies and young children suffering and in constant pain from a number of skin diseases such as scabies, others had open wounds and infections, whilst a number were suffering from ringworm.
This week we will start a program to educate parents on health and hygiene and how to recognise the conditions their children are suffering from.
We will involve the parents of the families whose lives have been positively changed as a result of our support through projects like the goat or rabbit program so that they may offer encouragement to these poor people who live without hope. We will assess the family's needs and work towards assisting them out of poverty with small income generating projects.

We're so grateful to each and every one of you, our supporters. Because of you we have been able to better the lives of so many children who come from this community.

WE HAVE A LOT MORE WORK TO DO!!!

Warmest wishes,

Jennifer Hughes-Bystrom

Lynet
Lynet

Linet was one of our very first pupil. We sponsored Linet because her mother, Purity, was unable to financially support herself and her daughter. After Purity gave birth to Linet she became paralyzed and is confined to a wheelchair. Her husband left her shortly after Linet’s birth.

Purity was totally dependent on her elderly mother in terms of financial support, accommodation and care for her daughter when Linet first came to Roko 20.

Purity has volunteered at Roko 20 on many occasions as a way of paying us back and expressing her gratitude for sponsoring her daughter. She helps in the kitchen cleaning rice and beans.

We supported Purity with a small loan enabling her to stock mobile phone credits which she sells from a small roadside stand outside her home. She has used the profits from her small business to purchase a dairy goat, which is providing additional income for Purity and her family through the sale of milk, thus allowing her to fully repay our small business loan to her and continue to grow her roadside business.

Because of your support Linet will grow up in control of her own destiny. She will not be forced into an early marriage at a very, very young age and a life destined to be lived in unimaginable poverty. Linet is blossoming in school, she is an eager student and intelligent young girl.

However, the other wonderful part of this story is the independence your support has allowed her mother, Purity to achieve. Because of you Purity is now able to support her family with pride and dignity, setting the example of the woman she wishes her daughter to grow up and become.

Thank you for helping us to feed and educate destitute women and children in Kenya like Purity and Linet. Your donations have helped us sustain the operations of Roko 20 Academy. Your continuous support will surely make a big difference in a child’s life. Please help us continue to grow and build additional classrooms by the end of 2016.

There is another wonderful opportunity coming up on March 16th to have your donation matched on Global Giving.

THE FIRST BONUS DAY OF 2016.

Bonus Day begins at 09:00:00 EDT on March 16, 2016 and ends at 23:59:59 PM EDT on March 16, 2016.

FIND OUT WHAT TIME IT IS IN MY TIME ZONE. Unfortunately donations made before 09:00:00 EDT will not be included in the matching bonus challenge.

Thank you for helping us continue to grow and share the life changing miracles you are all a part of.

Asante Sana,

Jennifer Hughes-Bystrom

Dear Friends and Family,

We’re wrapping up 2015 and WOW what a year of great change and growth it has been for us at Springs of Hope Foundation.

We’re currently on break for the Christmas holidays. The children are spending the break with their extended family, usually elderly grandparents.

However…no time for kicking back for us.

This has been a great opportunity to do our much needed development.  We’ve built a security fence around the 1.5 acre complex, installed a 10,000 liter tank and guttering for water harvesting and storage, replaced/repaired classroom furnishings and supplies. However the most exciting project is the addition of one more classroom. This will allow an additional 35 children to join us in the New Year, bringing the total number to 123.

We’re growing… and it’s very, very exciting!!! But we could not possibly achieve any of this without YOU. Believing in our mission and supporting us is the only reason any of the miracles of growth I see every year have been possible.

'We have come from far' ...  we have because we share the same vision for our children. To give more than hope, to give a future, to make a difference.

Merry Christmas to you all, from our family to your family and friends. May the world give you peace, the joy of living, and great love for others.

Many blessings,

Jennifer Hughes-Bystrom

Moses
Moses

Dear friends,
Education is a ladder that can lift a child out of poverty. For Moses, however, enrollment in primary school moved his family in the opposite direction. The financial strain of paying for school—which includes exam fees, uniform costs, and activity fees— proved too great for Moses’ HIV positive single mother, who asked, “Am I to feed my children, or pay for school fees?” It’s an impossible dilemma for a mother to find herself in, and especially difficult for a child with a desire for a better life. Moses’ mother had no other option; she chose to feed her family.
Moses left home, vowing never to return to school again. He spent the next two years of his very young life as a street child in Molo, fending for himself. It was in these very streets that we approached Moses to tell him that there was a safety net, Springs of Hope Foundation. Since then Springs of Hope Foundation has enrolled Moses in boarding school, relieving a huge and agonizing burden on his HIV positive mother and giving Moses hope for a brighter future. Moses is an exceptionally bright student who is doing very well in his new learning environment.

We have an upcoming opportunity to have all donations to Springs of Hope Foundation doubled through Global Giving on Wednesday, October 7th. Beginning at 12.PM East Coast Time and lasting until Midnight all donations will be matched by Microsoft Youth Spark. What time is it where I live?
Your support helps educate and prepare young people like Moses, as well as supporting our growth at Roko 20 Academy.
Thank you so much!

Pre School Class
Pre School Class

Dear Friends,

YOU and you’re continued support have made it possible for us to come this far and achieve so much.

The construction of our third classrooms is complete, so you will be able to see very soon how much your contribution is helping even more children and families in our very impoverished community achieve their dream of breaking the cycle of poverty by receiving an education FOR FREE!.

These are some of the projects we have planned for the upcoming months.

Classrooms: We'll be purchasing desks, chairs, bookshelves, blackboard and all teacher supplies for classes one and two in preparation for classes opening in January 2016.

Security: Build a secure fence around the school.

Water Harvesting: Install a 10,000 liter water tank and piping to harvest water from behind the classrooms to the new kitchen. We actually need 3 water tanks in total. Lantern Projects will be helping us raise enough money to purchase one of the additional tanks. One of our upcoming fundraisers will help us purchase the 3rd 10,000 liter tank which will be positioned near the children’s latrines for washing hands.

And last but not least...

Just Plain Fun: We'll be building a climbing frame for the children's playground.

Thank you very much for your donations and support, we would also like to take a moment to please ask you to continue to support us with your donation on the last bonus day of the year,  this coming Wednesday, October 7th. Beginning at 12.01 pm East Coast time and ending at midnight all eligable donations up to $1,000.00 will be matched by Microsoft Youth Spark.

Thank You, Asante Sana and Warmest Blessings from all of us at Springs of Hope Foundation,

Jennifer Hughes-Bystrom
