The lives of 3,650 extremely marginalised Musahar girls in the Terai region of Nepal will be transformed by this 15-month programme focussed on confidence and self-sufficiency through education and employment. The Musahar girls, aged 15-18, will be supported with life skills training to better understand their rights and access counselling and health support.
Musahars are the most politically marginalised, economically exploited and socially outcast people in Nepal. They are excluded from basic public services such as healthcare, education and even transport. The situation is even more dire for Musahar girls. Just 3.8% are literate and 100% are out of school by age 10. Many are forced into early marriage and have multiple children by the time they are 15 years old. They are trapped in a life of extreme poverty and social exclusion.
To empower Musahar girls with basic literacy and numeracy skills and employability training. Girls will participate in classes providing them with the skills and knowledge to establish and run a small business. Alongside this, girls will attend weekly life skills support circles to improve their self-confidence and decision-making. Training sessions are also designed to strengthen girls' awareness of their basic rights like education, health employment, social services.
