Rashid is a 7 year old boy; he graduated from our kindergarten school last year. We came in touch with Rashid and his family three years back through a referral from one of the parents at our school. It is through that parent that we got to know more about Rashid’s life history.
Rashid lost his mother when he was about one year old and he was left under the tutelage of his father. Rashid has two older siblings who were taken to their grandmother’s place since their father was not in a position to provide for their basic needs due to lack of proper job.
Unfortunately, a few months after the demise of Rashid’s mother, his father fell into depression to an extent that he was almost committing suicide. His neighbors became much worried about him and the future of Rashid. It is then that one of the neighbors came in to rescue Rashid from such a horrific situation. Rashid’s health status then was really worrying. His skin was malnourished and the clothes on his body were unbearable.
Indeed, Rashid joining St. Vincent Nursery school was a true life-changing phenomena for him and his family. Before admitting him to our school, we keenly followed up and met his father. From our findings, we administered his father for counselling sessions through our program administrator, because, we realized that he was truly in need of psychosocial support. We are very grateful that he was able to recover at the end of the sessions and we can confidently testify that Rashid’s father is back to life.
Rashid’s life has tremendously changed since he joined our school. This has been as a result of the services we provide for each child at our school. He received two pairs of school uniform, all the necessary learning materials and significantly, he has been always assured of three balanced diet meals a day. In the long run, Rashid has transformed into a jovial baby boy; almost everyone at school like to associate with him.
We are very grateful that Rashid has now successfully transited to grade 1 at Kibera primary school (which is one of the public primary schools in Kibera) through our support. We wish him the very best in his new academic journey and we cannot wait to see what the future holds for him.
