The tree campaign
We launched a campaign on the importance of trees to bring people closer to how important trees are for human health, and invited them to donate money to raise funds by November 24, to plant 24 pine seedlings on the occasion of the Center for Girls’ 24th birthday.
February 14, One Billion Rising Dance
As part of the One Billion Rising campaign, people around the world are dancing against violence against women to the song Break the chain.Since 2013, we have been participating and dancing against violence. This year, the activists of the Center for Girls danced along with the girls from Teatro Dance Studio.
Conference on the problem of violence and trafficking
We held a conference on problem of sexual violence and human trafficking in Nis. Representatives of institutions and civil society spoke at the conference.
Vulva Drawing Workshop
We supported and empowered our activist to lead the Vulva Drawing Workshop as part of the V-day. campaign. Nine girls and women drew vulvas at the workshop, through laughter, music and socializing.
Performingplay Oxygen in Kosovska Mitrovica and Vlasotince
The second and third performance of the play O2, directed by Dragana J, performed by Dragana J. and Tatjana N, took place in Kosovska Mitrovica and Vlasotince. In Kosovska Mitrovica, the play was performed as part of the Women for Peace and Security project, towards improving good neighborly relations between Serbia and Kosovo. The play was performed in Vlasotince on the occasion of May 16, the World SOS Telephone Day, within which the activists of the Regional Network South gathered. During these two performances, four trees were planted. Thanks to the show, our planet is so far richer by six trees.
Solidarity with and for women of Ukraine
Holding a banner Solidarity with and for the women of Ukraine we sent our support to women of Ukraine. There were many negative comments, but a few moments marked this action. A couple of fellow citizens approached us, gave us support and stood by us. What sets this action apart from all the previous ones is the hug we got from a passerby who came back and asked "Can I hug you?".
For free and legal abortion
We held a banner For free and legal abortion in the center of the city of Nis, to remind the public that abortion in Serbia must remain legal.
March 8 in Nis
We marked this day by holding banners in the center of the city of Nis and sending the following messages: For women's human rights; More feminists in decision-making positions, to hear women's suffrage; Stop violence against girls / women; We demand that femicide be recognized as a specific crime; The woman's place is in resistance; We demand that women's work be paid / For an economically independent woman / s.
March 8 in the mirror
The regional network South held a tribune March 8 in the mirror in Dimitrovgrad. The event was organized by the Independent Women's Center from Dimitrovgrad. Activists of the Regional Network South from: Women for Peace Leskovac, SOS for Women and Children Victims of Violence, Vlasotince and the Center for Girls, Nis spoke about violence against women, femicide and sexual violence. After the tribune, a street action was held dedicated to the fight for women's human rights.
Socializing event with Rada B.
We hung out with Rada B, a feminist, peace activist, former director of Women's Studies in Zagreb, coordinator of One Billion Rises Against Violence Against Women in Croatia, and a politician. She shared with us part of her experience of what it is like to be a feminist in politics.
Art exhibition The sky is The Friend
We opened exhibition of art pieces created at the 7th Feminist Art Colony, under the name The Sky is The Friend at Nis Culture Center Gallery. Milena K. O, one of the artists from previous colony shared her view of artworks:
"... Even when a woman is presented as a mass that is associated with the body or in the form of dresses, an association is gained with femininity and women's struggle in equality, perseverance in feminism and in organizing an art colony held in a ”holy place” of feminism, although many would not like to admit it. The spirit of Nadezda Petrovic, who founded an art colony under another name more than 100 years ago, is always present there and with every work created in all previous feminist art colonies, her spirit of freedom lives and spreads among artists".
Trainings on prevention of human trafficking and educational theater with the youth
With a team of young high school students, we conducted trainings on orevention of human trafficking and educational theater within the project Protect young people in Nis from human trafficking supported by the US Embassy. We had a lot of rehearsals while we rehearsed the scenes that were later performed in 3 high schools in Nis. We’ve planned to do 20 educational theaters in 10 high schools in Nis.
Gender Sensitive Language Workshop
One of our activists held a workshop on gender sensitive language for highschoolers performing educational theaters, students that have residency training at Center for Girls and for our activists.
Celebration of Center for Girls’ 24th birthday
The Center for Girls celebrated its 24th birthday in nature, near the Bubanj Memorial Park in the closest circle of the family - with its activists.
Cleaning action on the occasion of The Earth Day
On the occasion of The Earth Day, we gathered a team of interested citizens and through cleaning actio, we collected several bags of garbage on the quay of river Nisava, in Nis.
Lecture held by OB/GYN for students of 7th and 8th grade at Dositej O. Elementary School, in Nis
43 girls of the 7th and 8th grade of the elementary School Dositej O. in Nis had a conversation with gynecologist Merima. The girls asked a lot of questions, and some of the things they learned that day are news about the HPV vaccine, as well as how they can still protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies and STD’S, when should they have their first gynecological exam; they also learnt informations about abortion, tampons, painful menstruation… We also mentioned the topic of sexual harassment. This conversation between the girls and the gynecologist was organized as part of the month of May, which is dedicated to women's health.
Breakfast with the media in Leskovac
Marking the Day of Remembrance of Women Victims of Violence on May 18. Activists of the Regional Network South marked this day in Leskovac with a conversation about the phenomenon of femicide with institutions and the media.
Marking May 28 by sharing leaflets
We marked May 28 - the International Day of Women's Actions for Reproductive Health and Women's Reproductive Rights by distributing leaflets on the prevention of cervical cancer.We distributed more than 400 leaflets to our fellow citizens of Nis.
Meeting with the delegation of the GRETA expert group
Meeting of the activists of the Center for Girls with the delegation of the Group of Experts of the Council of Europe for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings - GRETA. Their task is to assess the implementation of the Convention by the contracting states. We told them what we are doing in the field of combating human trafficking, what are the obstacles and what are our plans to improve the position of vulnerable groups of children and people in Nis.
