Thabang aims that all input into the lives of the children in its care, ultimately brings about positive development for each of them.
Arts and crafts: gets the children thinking and creating plans from an early age. Creating their own crafts, brings much enjoyment and is very therapeutic. 'Arty Party' is held regularly for different age groups and the children love to attend. Sometimes, the in-house social worker uses art to explain various concepts to the children which enables her to provide a therapeutic platform. Beadwork requires much patience and care to create a pretty piece of work. These characteristics are important building blocks for little lives. (see pics 1, 2,3).
Learning to line up for running races, competing with respect for others, learning to lose gracefully and win with humility- these are all taught alongside the physical exercises and fun. (see pic 4).
At the Drop-in Centre in the informal settlement of Smash Block, the children identified as coming from vulnerable households, receive regular food parcels, to ensure that they are receiving food, even when they do not eat at the Drop-in centre itself. Having food in their tummies, enables the Thabang carers to focus on the delopmental programmes including Arts & Crafts, exercises/sport and academic support. (see pic 5).
On the 28th April, Tessa White (director of Thabang Children's Project) gathered students from their various places of study, to join together, catch-up with news and encourage one another to persist and be diligent and not grow weary. These students came through the Thabang Child & Youth care centre as well as the Thabang Drop-in centre. (see pic 6).
Through various generous donors, these youth are given an opportunity to attend tertiary institutions. Thabang endeavours to support our children to become positive youth, learning skills and characteristics to become independent and positive adults- role models for the future generations.
