Educating 550+ girls through STEM in Afghanistan

By Navid Amini | Monitoring Officer

LEARN Afghan continues its mission to provide quality education to underserved regions in Afghanistan. Operating across six provinces: Kandahar, Helmand, Bamiyan, Samangan, Daikundi, and Herat. We are dedicated to empowering students, particularly girls, in overcoming barriers to education. Our initiatives have now reached 760 students, with 127 graduates successfully completing intensive training programs. This report outlines our achievements, challenges, and future goals as we work toward a more equitable and educated society.

Key Achievements and Impact

  • Supported 650 students across six provinces with comprehensive educational programs.
  • Successfully graduated 127 students equipped with essential life and professional skills.

  • Introduced digital learning platforms to bridge the technology gap in underserved communities.
  • Prioritized holistic student well-being with mental resilience training and menstrual hygiene education.

3.Infrastructure and Resources

  • Created safe, supportive spaces for learning through the provision of classrooms, school furniture, and essential supplies.
  • Provided laptops, internet access, and STEM class resources to modernize the learning experience.
  • Developed tailored curriculums addressing the unique needs of each province.

4.Teacher Recruitment and Development

  • Invested in professional development for teachers, ensuring effective delivery of programs and long-term sustainability.

5.Academic Bridging and Higher Education Support

  • Implemented accelerated learning programs and exam preparation to close gaps in education caused by the ban on girls’ schooling from grades 6 to 12.
  • Positioned students for re-entry into formal education and higher education opportunities once restrictions are lifted.

6.Community Impact

  • Fostered a culture of ambition and resilience, inspiring students and communities.
  • Many graduates are now contributing to their families and communities, setting an example of empowerment and economic independence.

Financial Overview

Our funding model ensures resources are allocated effectively to meet the needs of students and educators:

  • $10: Covers a student’s educational fees for one year.
  • $20: Provides curriculum books for a student.
  • $30: Funds transportation for two students.
  • $100: Supplies STEM class resources for three students.
  • $150: Covers one teacher’s monthly salary.
  • $500: Purchases three computers for students.
  • $600: Equips a school with chairs and tables.
  • $1,200: Establishes a new classroom with essential furniture and learning materials.

Challenges

The ban on girls’ education from grades 6 to 12 remains a critical challenge, depriving countless young girls of the opportunity to learn and grow. This policy has created a significant educational gap, limiting students’ futures and undermining societal progress. Despite these obstacles, LEARN Afghan is steadfast in its commitment to providing education through innovative and resilient methods.

Looking ahead, we aim to expand into more underserved regions while addressing the specific needs of local communities. Our focus includes strengthening higher education pathways for graduates through scholarships and academic support, enhancing digital platforms to increase accessibility to education, and continuing our advocacy for girls’ education and gender equality across Afghanistan.

Conclusion

LEARN Afghan’s programs have transformed the educational landscape for 760 students and graduates in six provinces, creating pathways to economic independence, social empowerment, and community leadership. By prioritizing quality education, holistic development, and resilience, we are fostering a generation equipped to lead Afghanistan toward a brighter and more equitable future.
