Through #BooksGiveRefuge, #BookOnPrescription and other initiatives, the Universal Reading Foundation continue to deliver Ukrainian-language titles and Polish-Ukrainian bilingual editions to the young readers who need them most.
We don’t wait for children to come to us. We go where they already spend their days: schools and kindergartens, libraries, community centers and healthcare facilities.
What can one book do? It can calm a restless evening. It can give a child something steady to hold on to when so much else has changed. It offers comfort and continuity, and a quiet reassurance that home is not entirely out of reach. Few things support a child’s emotional resilience like reading in their own language.
At the same time, we want these children to feel at home here too. That’s why Ukrainian children join their Polish classmates at meetings with children’s authors, such as those held in Warsaw. These lively, joyful events show how easily curiosity crosses language barriers. Children make new friends, grow more confident in Polish, and discover a whole world of Polish-language books together.
None of this would be possible without you. Thank you for your trust and for believing that books matter. With your support, we can keep placing them, one by one, into the hands of children who need them.
