Anju is back to school after a gap of 3 years!

By Educate Girls | Project Manager

Anju, a 10-year-old from a remote village in the Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh is quite fond of reading. Her parents, who work as wedding musicians, struggled to make ends meet, yet they managed to enrol their daughter in the village’s private school. Anju, determined and resilient, faced taunts from classmates who looked down on her family's profession. However, she remained positive and dedicated to her studies.

Tragedy struck when Anju fell ill, her parents depleting their savings for her recovery. The prolonged illness led to a financial strain, making it impossible for them to pay Anju's school fees on time. The school, unyielding to their plea for more time, withheld Anju's Transfer Certificate, a crucial document for enrolment elsewhere. She had to drop out and three years later, Anju, the girl who loved to read, was now a shadow of herself, giving up her potential to study further.

Three years later, the tide turned when Educate Girls identified her as an out of school girl. Usha, Educate Girls’ Field Coordinator, met with her parents and discovered Anju's plight Usha, determined to make a difference, visited the private school and spoke with the teacher there. She explained the family's financial predicament, emphasising their desire to pay the fees if given some leniency. After much persuasion, the teacher relented, finally agreeing to release Anju's Transfer Certificate.

Anju and her family rejoiced as they received the long-awaited document. And finally, she joyfully enrolled in Grade 2 of the village primary school. Fast forward to the present, and Anju not only caught up on lost time but excelled, successfully advancing to the third grade!
