Africa ranks among the regions with the lowest primary school enrollment worldwide: 33 million children are out of school, including 18 million girls. In Tanzania, almost half (47%) of primary-school–age girls are not in school. Although pregnancy among Tanzanian girls aged 15–19 fell by about 12% between 2004 and 2010, more than 40% of young women become mothers by age 18, leaving the country with one of the highest adolescent pregnancy rates globally (UNICEF). Girls in urban Tanzania are also far more likely to finish secondary school than their rural peers—about eight times more likely.
AID Tanzania currently supports roughly 25 girls in the rural Arusha community by covering tuition, uniforms, shoes, and books. Donations through GlobalGiving have also funded additional books and supplies for five primary-school girls.
We are deeply grateful to our partners and supporters whose generosity helps ensure Tanzanian girls can access quality education.
