This project will encourage and uphold academic excellence for 16 girls in Kenya by providing them with consistent support, professional mentoring, counselling, safe housing and individualized tutoring.
COVID-19 has caused a rise in cases of sexual and domestic violence as socioeconomic disparities are widening, schools are still closed, curfews and travel restrictions are policed, and girls are forced to work and shelter in unsafe places - some are sheltering in place with their perpetrators. Our scholars and their families have been disproportionately affected by this global pandemic which is requiring us to modify our methods.
With all schools closed, we are funding additional support outside of our usual programming. We have transitioned to an in-house learning community providing holistic support for our scholars. We believe that this opportunity will allow them to pursue their academic goals and potentially prevent sexual violence.
The project will provide extra support, for our 16 scholars to attain academic excellence and be fully supported during the pandemic.
