Educate 300 children of the Himalayas in rural Nepal

By Pratik Bajracharya | Project Co-ordinator

PROJECT LOCATION

The project is concentrated within 2 schools: Shree Janapriya Basic School located in Chun and Shree Kanjirowa Basic School located in Daapu, Lower Dolpa.

PROJECT SUMMARY

The aim behind Karnali Education Mission with CREASION is to create and establish an inclusive educational system in Dolpa that would be self-sustaining with the goal to empower as well as elevate 300 children from all social and economic backgrounds, children with and without disabilities as well as youth and women.

THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM AND THE PEOPLE AFFECTED

Dolpa is one of the most secluded areas within the Karnali Province where children cannot access their fundamental right to education due to the extremely rural setting of the geographical aspect. The average schooling year in Dolpa is about 2.53 years only. The educational facilities lack infrastructure, high poverty, and impoverishment rates, ineffective administration. COVID-19 has made this already difficult task nearly impossible due to the lack of technology in rural settings of the nation. There is a lack of information and knowledge about the pandemic as well as the safety protocols and prevention methods. Due to the lack of 21st-century advancement and development in the educational structure, there has been a constant battle between traditional and vocational learning styles. There has also been an extreme difficulty in coping with the idea of classroom culture among students and parents.

THE NATURE OF SOLUTIONS, OBJECTIVE, AND IMPACT

PRELIMINARY WORK

Mr. Binod Shahi has spent two months in the project area in Lower Dolpa for pre-assessment of the schools. Currently, there are 300 students enrolled in both schools. The enrollment of students is decreasing yearly. These students are provided with only curriculum-based education by the administration. They lack engagement in extracurricular activities limiting their growth, self-esteem, and problem-solving skills. Thus, Mr. Shahi spent time teaching the students traditionally, but along with entrepreneur skills, farming, general knowledge, arts, etc. But, due to the harsh winter season, classes in the region have been halted temporarily until February and will recommence from March onwards.

EXPECTED IMPACTS

The two schools would have developed infrastructural capacity to provide inclusive pragmatic education to special children and empower women, children, and youth. Children graduating from the classes would receive quality education for holistic growth. An increase in the schooling of students will provide a base for career development and prosperous economic growth of the region. The facilitation to the schools will support harmony as well as pave a path for a wiser Dolpa community. Thus, to achieve these outcomes the following activities have been planned for the upcoming months.

  • Teacher's training: The teachers of both schools will be trained via the Training of Teachers (TOT) program. They will be trained on different educating methodologies along with English language classes for teachers and higher-grade students
  • Stationeries and art materials: Two sets of stationeries and art materials including notebook, pens, colors, brush, sketchpad, crayons, etc. will be provided to enhance the creativity of the children.
  • Books: Reference books, storybooks, fiction, and non-fiction books will be provided to schools in order to develop a reading culture among the students from a young age.
  • Event organization: For the development of the community, a cultural event, tree plantation program, cleanup program, and a fair will be organized by the schools.
  • Gardening tools: Two sets of gardening tools for each school will be provided to teach the students about gardening, taking care of the environment, making them more environmentally conscious and self-sufficient.
  • Carpentry tools: Two sets of carpentry tools for each school will be provided for any type of necessary construction work.
  • Computer: Two computer sets will be provided, one for each school. The students will be provided computer training to use basic programs.
  • Sports item: Two sets of sports items including football, net, cricket bat and ball, jump rope, badminton, volleyball, and indoor games will be distributed in each school.
