DIL’s IT program has been enthusiastically embraced by communities in Khairpur and we have seen a positive shift in student and parent engagement at all levels. In schools where we have established computer labs, we have witnessed an increase in literacy and numeracy level of students, higher rate of student retention, particularly among girls, and more effective, interactive teaching pedagogies that inspire learning. Our experience has also shown that access to technology is a critical driver in building local capacities, promoting gender inequality and mobilising local support for education.
The IT lab of Kumb School in Khairpur had 10 workstations but all the systems were outdated and were unable to run the DIL ICT syllabus software. These outdated systems were replaced with 12 laptops, with solar panels installed for power backup. New computer docks and re-wiring of the computer lab was also completed during the upgrade. After the up gradation, the computer lab is fully functional and the students are utilizing the resources to the optimal level
Our experience has shown that the solar panel is the most feasible and promising power back-up solution, particularly in remote areas of Pakistan, where electric grids are either absent or subject to power failures. Installation of solar panels has enabled teachers to lead classes without disruption and students to benefit from equal participation in IT-related activities performed on laptops.
The students of Kumb School were able to participate in IT based Project Based Learning activities where students are engaged tasked with resolving issues based on real life scenarios. The issue and its solution are linked to the curriculum; they are encouraged to research, explore, design and create a workable solution. This exercise develops not only their IT skills, but also their leadership qualities, and prepares them to problem-solve, both in, and out of the school premises.
DIL has and will continue to work towards achieving this goal of enabling every individual, girl or boy, to realize their right to education. Our goals are set, but we need your continued help in bringing them to life. On behalf of the school community, students and teachers, DIL would like to extend a huge thank you to all who have contributed so generously.
THANK YOU!
