Dear Donor,

We have seen that it can. As a person who cares about the issue of human trafficking, I want to thank you for taking a step to make a difference and join us in supporting heroes who are in these communities doing this important work. Urmi Basu, the Founder and Director of New Light India is one of those rare individuals who has devoted her life to helping children and women who have been victims of human trafficking.

While we raise money to build another shelter and safe home for the children, we appreciate those of you who have been so generous in helping us support the education and physical needs of the children. The care at the shelter is palpable and each child feels loved and cherished-a far cry from their life on the street. The children see doctors, are put in school, and many of the girls are entering college and vocational schools.

I know I speak for many when I thank you wholeheartedly for your generous support. We want to particularly thank the subscription donors who have decided to give an automatic monthly donation. Your support means so much.

Can the cycle of human slavery and sex trafficking be stopped? We are witnessing it every day. Please click on this link to read the article from a volunteer at New Light. http://www.villagevolunteers.org/volunteer-journals-india/volunteering-at-new-light-by-dina-bennett/

We thank you for your past donation and want to report that your donations have been sent to New Light India in support of caring for the children of women who have been trafficked.  Urmi Basu, the founder and director is an amazing woman who is featured in Nicolas Kristof's (Pulitzer Prize winning New York Time's columnist) book and documentary, Half the Sky.

We admire how Urmi works with the chidlren in the shelter to not just try to stop sex trafficking, but to stop the cycle by educating and sheltering the children. The girls are provided with a safe home away from the red light district where they are going to school, vocational schools and college.  Whenever possible, Urmi also assists the mother's in helping to train them in marketiable skills.

We have big plans to expand at New Light India and we truly appreciate your kind and generous support.

Best regards,

Shana

Dear Friends,

Thank you for donating to New Light in the past. We are launching a campaign to support the children of sex workers and those who are victimized by human trafficking. The mission of the campaign will be to build a new shelter, while your continued support will help provide education and opportunities that protects young girls, children and women at high risk in one of the oldest red light districts of Kolkata in West Bengal, India.

If you read Nicolas Kristof's book Half the Sky, than you know of New Light India and what an amazing job Urmi Basu is doing to break the cycle of sex trafficking. Your money does a "world of good"

This is just one story of a young girl, Supriya Majhi, receiving support for a better future.

Your donation matters, a recurring monthly donation of $20 can see to it that Supriya and girls like her are able to attend vocational school and college. If 75% of our donors do a recurring donation, your donation is matched!

To volunteer at New Light, contact Shana Greene at shana@villagevolunteers.org.

Best Regards,

Shana

Thank you from New Light
Thank you from New Light

Hello!

Thank you for your donation to New Light India. We have wired the money and it's being well used. Urmi Basu is very grateful. New Light, in the Red Light District in Kolkata is a wonderful example of how a little can make a big difference.

We are off to a slow start on our fundraising through Global Giving but we hope to step it up through some exciting opportunities. We ask your help to tell your friends, family and colleagues about New Light and the campaign on Global Giving. A monthly donation for as little as $15 over the year will send two children at the shelter/home to secondary school. $25 a month will send a young woman to college or vocational school.

Nicolas Kristof the Pulitzer Prize winning columnist for the New York Times and author of Half the Sky writes about the work being done by Urmi Basu. On September 22nd Village Volunteers will be participating in a race in Central Park to raise money for New Light.  If you would like to pledge or run with us you might also meet Urmi as she will be in New York as a guest of Nicolas for the premier of Half the Sky that evening. To see an excerpt from the video featuring Urmi, click on Courage in India. http://fyb.umd.edu/half/women.html

If you would like to volunteer at New Light, run in the race in Central Park or pledge, or if you have any other questions on how to get involved contact me directly at shana@villagevolunteers.org.

Best wishes,

Shana Greene
