Dear Donor,
Any conversation about New Light and how they educate and shelter children who ae the children of sex workers must begin with Urmi Basu, the extraordinary founder. Urmi Basi founded New Light India in 2000 to promote gender equality and fight violence and abuse of women, girl children and young people. The initiative today provides care and support to more than a thousand people. The organization fights against child prostitution and trafficking and protects young girls, children and women who are at high risk in their community by providing safe shelters and housing, educational opportunities, health care, and legal aid.
Urmi is featured in two time Pulitzer prize winning author, journalist and op-ed columnist Nicholas Kristof' columns, and his best selling book and documentary Half the Sky. The documentary was shown on PBS featuring Urmi and her work with the victims of trafficking. http://video.pbs.org/video/2274938924 Following the documentary Urmi received the Global Citizen Award at the Global Music Festival in Central Park, New York which was organized to mark zero tolerance for hunger, poverty and abuse.
The work we do with Urmi is always inspiring. While we have not raised a lot on this platform, we hope to do so in the future. Every bit counts.
Dear Supporter,
It is always a pleasure to update you on New Light. This shelter is very aptly named because of the ability they have to bring children out of the darkness into the light. The care and support for children creates an atmosphere of support and a foundation for the children to have a better life. Providing education is opening their eyes to all of the possiblities.
I would like to share with you a video that was aired on PBS with Urmi Basu the founder and director of New Light.

Dear Donor,
Thank you for your donations in the past and a particular thank you to those who are doing subscriptions on a monthly basis.
How effective is your donation? Consider that the children supported through New Light were sleeping under the beds of their mothers and are now in a night shelter where rows of matts are lined up with children tucked into bed. Think about the rows of bowls lined up to feed the children and the love and support that they feel.
New Light is a safe and clean oasis where children can feel special. They are educated and when they mature and in danger of being pulled into the sex trade, they go to live in a safe house. The children are educated and encouraged to achieve higher educational goals. There are several in college as well as in trade schools.
We continue to raise money for New Light knowing full well that donations are well used to shore up some of the most vulnerable people on the planet.
Thank you,
Shana

Dear Donor,
We have seen that it can. As a person who cares about the issue of human trafficking, I want to thank you for taking a step to make a difference and join us in supporting heroes who are in these communities doing this important work. Urmi Basu, the Founder and Director of New Light India is one of those rare individuals who has devoted her life to helping children and women who have been victims of human trafficking.
While we raise money to build another shelter and safe home for the children, we appreciate those of you who have been so generous in helping us support the education and physical needs of the children. The care at the shelter is palpable and each child feels loved and cherished-a far cry from their life on the street. The children see doctors, are put in school, and many of the girls are entering college and vocational schools.
I know I speak for many when I thank you wholeheartedly for your generous support. We want to particularly thank the subscription donors who have decided to give an automatic monthly donation. Your support means so much.
Can the cycle of human slavery and sex trafficking be stopped? We are witnessing it every day. Please click on this link to read the article from a volunteer at New Light. http://www.villagevolunteers.org/volunteer-journals-india/volunteering-at-new-light-by-dina-bennett/

We thank you for your past donation and want to report that your donations have been sent to New Light India in support of caring for the children of women who have been trafficked. Urmi Basu, the founder and director is an amazing woman who is featured in Nicolas Kristof's (Pulitzer Prize winning New York Time's columnist) book and documentary, Half the Sky.
We admire how Urmi works with the chidlren in the shelter to not just try to stop sex trafficking, but to stop the cycle by educating and sheltering the children. The girls are provided with a safe home away from the red light district where they are going to school, vocational schools and college. Whenever possible, Urmi also assists the mother's in helping to train them in marketiable skills.
We have big plans to expand at New Light India and we truly appreciate your kind and generous support.
Best regards,
Shana
