Focused on education and safety for the most vulnerable girls in Ndhiwa, Kenya, the projects supported by your donation help prevent human rights injustices such as gender-based violence, child marriage and teenage pregnancies directly threatening the lives of girls. We support over 500 girls in attending school, using skills training, counselling and other activities which have a proven positive and sustainable impact on the lives of individuals, their families and the wider communities.
In Homa Bay County, 63% of people live in extreme poverty and 1 in 4 people are infected with HIV - the highest rate in Kenya. Adolescent girls are most at risk due to lack of sexual health education, widespread exploitation, gender based violence and harmful traditional practices including polygamy and child marriage. 57% of women & girls have experienced physical violence and 31.6% sexual violence. In Ndhiwa, only 15.7% of children progress to secondary school, very few of whom are girls.
We use a holistic approach involving entire communities in gender equality so girls in rural Kenya can create their own bright futures. Our key girls education priorities are: 1. Empowering girls with health, life skills and well-being educations. 2.Inclusive empowerment through mixed gender activities. 3. STEM. We partner with 16 schools in Ndhiwa to provide learning resources, teacher training, and build girls confidence through football and debating groups.
Since 2008, Team Kenya has empowered over 60,000 people in western Kenya through initiatives like agricultural training, table-banking, STEM tuition, and programmes such as Football for Empowerment and Digital Footprints. By addressing barriers to education and promoting financial independence, we foster gender equality, sustainable development, and community transformation.
