As a junior at American University studying abroad in Kenya this past semester, I had the privilege of volunteering at the Talia Agler Girls Shelter (TAGS), operated by the Centre for Domestic Training and Development (CDTD). Over four months, I built deep connections with the resilient girls and devoted staff, and learned powerful lessons in humility, patience, and leadership.
TAGS provides a safe haven for over 150 girls and children survivors of human trafficking, gender-based violence, and forced migration. It’s more than a shelter, it’s a community rooted in healing, education, and empowerment. During my time there, I supported the staff with administrative work, tutoring, and creative activities. Most meaningfully, I listened to the girls' stories of strength, hope, and unshakable determination.
Thanks to the support of the Tali Fund family and other generous donors, many girls are enrolled in school or vocational training while living in a nurturing environment. Still, essentials like clothing, medication, and school supplies are often scarce. In response, a staff member and I launched a small fundraiser. Surprisingly, we more than doubled our goal proof of how these stories resonate far beyond the shelter walls.
What moved me most was witnessing the power of sisterhood. Despite their traumatic pasts, the girls consistently showed each other joy, care, and solidarity braiding each other’s hair before school, helping with homework, and offering comfort during tough moments. Their compassion and drive showed me that true leadership is built on community, empathy, and trust.
On my final day, we celebrated with a small goodbye and birthday party, joined by CDTD’s Director - Edith Murogo and my mother, who had come to visit. It was a moment of gratitude, reflection, and shared love.
Throughout my time at TAGS, I was reminded of the late Talia Agler, an alumna of this same study abroad program. Though I never met her, her legacy is alive in every corner of the shelter. Her passion for justice laid the foundation for this incredible space. I’m looking forward to continue her work and carry her spirit forward.
