THREADS OF CHANGE: Education and Self-Reliance.

A joyful moment at the Shelter
A joyful moment at the Shelter

In 2025, Talia Agler Girls Shelter was more than a place of refuge, it was a turning point for girls whose lives had been shaped by violence, neglect, and exploitation. Throughout the year, 140 girls arrived seeking safety, each carrying deep wounds but also untapped potential. This quarter, in particular, reflected the courage it takes to heal, to learn, and to begin again.

Education remained central to recovery and empowerment. Despite disrupted schooling and traumatic pasts, 4 girls sat for the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment and achieved scores of 63, 62, 61, and 33 points, remarkable milestones earned through resilience and determination. 3 younger girls completed their KPSEA examinations, while 6 candidates successfully sat for KCSE, opening doors to higher education and meaningful careers.

Alongside formal education, economic empowerment took firm root. Through the Tali Fund, 125 girls were supported to access education, while an additional 45 girls from the community benefited from vocational skilling programmes, expanding opportunities beyond the classroom. As part of these efforts, 6 young women enrolled at the East Africa Institute of Management, pursuing vocational training in cosmetology, caregiving, health assistance, sewing and knitting, and food production and cookery. These skills offer more than pathways to employment; they restore dignity, expand choice, and foster independence. Notably, 2 of the trainees are now preparing to begin professional attachments at a private hospital, a critical milestone in the transition from training to sustainable livelihoods.

Healing extended beyond classrooms and skills training. Through the holiday mentorship program, “Healing from Trauma and Being Inspired,” 55 girls completed an intensive journey of psychosocial support, mentorship, and self-discovery. They emerged with restored self-esteem, emotional resilience, and the confidence to envision a future not defined by their past.

Among the many lives transformed this quarter is Veronica (name changed), a 13-year-old girl who arrived at the shelter five months pregnant and unable to sit her Grade 6 exams. TAGS immediately provided counseling, antenatal care, and a safe school transfer to enable her to sit her KPSEA exams in a supportive environment. Working closely with a children’s officer, justice was pursued and the perpetrator was arrested. Veronica later gave birth safely, surrounded by care and compassion. Today, she is healing at home, supported, hopeful, and no longer alone. Two additional girls also gave birth safely this quarter, each mother receiving medical, emotional, and social support, and each child welcomed into a circle of care.

These are not just statistics or program outputs, they are stories of resilience, restoration, and courage. At Talia Agler Girls Shelter, we do more than provide protection. We interrupt cycles of violence, restore dignity, and build pathways to education, healing, and economic independence. Every girl served is living proof that trauma does not have to determine destiny.

With your continued support, TAGS can reach more girls in crisis, expand mentorship and vocational training programs, strengthen educational support, and ensure that no girl is turned away when she seeks help.

Your partnership transforms fear into courage and vulnerability into strength. Together, we can protect more girls today and empower them to build hopeful, independent futures tomorrow.
