The Kenyan government recently gave a directive that structures sitting about 100 meters from waterways be demolished. Out of the 27 affected schools in Nairobi, three were in Mathare constituency and were our partner schools enrolled under the Alternative Providers of Basic Education and Training (APBET) institutions. APBET institutions provide essential education services in informal settlements where government schools are scarce.
According to Mr. Wanjohi, a National Executive Committee Member of APBET, the demolitions affected many learners out of school noting that many students already dropped out of school after they were displaced by floods. “Most students who attend these schools come from humble backgrounds and their households cannot afford fees in public or private institutions,” he stated.
Our call for support is therefore to help these affected schools to reconstruct the classrooms and acquire reading and learning materials enough for over 300 students who are the direct beneficiaries of the project. We do appreciate your commitment and continued support to this project.
