Learning About Climate Change in the Sunshine

By Felicia Hansen | Fundraising Manager

Lesson about the environment!
Lesson about the environment!

Every Wednesday at DAKTARI, our learners take part in lessons about the environment and climate change. But instead of only talking about renewable energy in the classroom, we can actually show them how it works.
Just outside our workshop is DAKTARI’s solar power system, which provides most of the electricity used at the camp. The children walk down to see the solar panels for themselves and learn how sunlight can be turned into electricity.

For many of our learners, climate change and renewable energy can feel like very big subjects. Seeing the panels makes it much easier to understand, and of course there are always plenty of questions. It is a simple but very practical way to show them that the choices we make about energy and our environment really matter.

A new chapter for DAKTARI is here ... While our education programme continues to grow, we also recently made an important change to how we present DAKTARI. After 20 years, DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage has become DAKTARI Bush School.

Our resident animals are still very much part of DAKTARI and will continue to receive lifelong care in our animal sanctuary, but the new name simply better reflects who we are today and our mission: Inspiring youth to protect nature and shape their future.

Another important part of this mission is our international volunteers. They help us teach and spend the week alongside the children, but the learning goes both ways. The children meet people from different countries and cultures, while our volunteers leave with a deeper understanding of life in rural South Africa. This exchange has always been something very special about DAKTARI.
If you want to come and volunteer with us, please read more about it here.

Thank you, as always, for helping us continue this work and giving young people the opportunity to learn, discover and care for the world around them.

With gratitude,
The DAKTARI Team
