Education for Visually Challenged Students

By Ilakkiaarasi | Fundrising Executive

Indian Association for the Blind (lAB) Madurai based NGO from South India, working at the grassroots level for the education, employment and rehabilitation of people with visually challenged. It was founded in 1985 by visually challenged activist Late Mr. S.M.A.Jinnah and a group of like-minded visually challenged people to provide comprehensive education, employment and rehabilitation opportunities for socio-economically disempowered visually challenged children and adults with a special focus on those from the rural background.

If the cost of education becomes a deterrent for a child’s right to pursue education, then the society has failed in its responsibility collectively. Although the number of schools in rural parts of the country is increasing, many teachers lack the skill and training to teach students with visual disability. In many cases both students and teachers are not sensitized to the needs of students with visual disability and leave them vulnerable to bullying and teasing.

IAB provides a safe and secure environment for the children with visual disability where teachers are trained to handle such students or in some cases where teachers themselves are visually disabled creating a conducive and empathetic learning atmosphere. IAB is equipped with a Braille library where many books and other assistive devices that help children with their academics are present.

Educating children with visual disability especially when coming from a disadvantaged economic background takes a lot different resources and expertise. IAB stands by its commitment to educate and empower children through education but the cost of educating a child with such special needs requires monetary assistance from well meaning, generous donors. The opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life is priceless. IAB appeals to donors to come forward and make a difference by sponsoring a child’s education to make a difference.

Through GlobalGiving we gained numerous donors across the world and this leads to raising our fund through $14,897 by 189 Philanthropists. Once again, we want to thank all the philanthropists for their contributions and also the GlobalGiving who paved the way for us to utilize their donations from all over the world. We look forward to raising more for this cause. As always, we, along with GlobalGiving, will do our best in reaching out to generous donors across the Globe and will strive to bring happiness on the face of each of our beneficiaries.
