300 Students from Kibera Empowered Each Week.

We trust you are doing well. We would like to sincerely thank you for the continued support and prayer. A lot has happend since we last sent you our project report and we are glad to keep you posted on what has been happening.

Most of our dear students were affected during the post election violence which happened after the the declaration of the presidential results. We are glad that your kind donation was able to provide school supply and school fees to over 70 students as they reported back to school.

Meet Kevin.

Kevin is a student at Silver Spring Secondary school. He has been attending our mentorship session for the past 3 years. Early this year we introduced a project that was aimed at monitoring students grades. When we started the project, Kevin's grades were "C" this was due to lack of school fees and good environment to study.

Through your kind giving at the beginning of the year, we are glad to report that last term Kevin as able to score a mean of grade of "B" together with other students whose grades had significantly improved. Thorugh your support 300 students arer able to be empowered each week.

We invite you to continue partnering with us to sustain more lives in Kibera slum. Once they graduate out of high school more students are not able to join university or college due lack of finances or low grades. This is year we will over 200 student graduate from high school. You can partner with us to equip them with leadership and entreprenuership that will help sustain their needs and those of their families.

Creating sustainable Change in Kibera Slums: We are transforming one life at a time!

Jane was 16 years old when we first met her . Her school is one big hall divided into 5 classes using boxes (Form 1, 2, 3, and 4). In addition, her school did not have enough resources. Jane was afraid, this would greatly affect her final exams. These challenges at school and the fact that her parents were not able to pay her school fees made things worse.

After graduating from high school, Jane joined the Leadership Development and Entrepreneurship program at Garden of Hope Foundation. The aim of the program is to provide entrepreneurship and leadership skills to students like Jane who are not able to join university or college due to insuficient funds or low grades.

Due to her hard work and determination, Jane was spotted by Friends who had visited Garden of Hope Foundation, she was offered a job opportunity and in April 2017, she got her first employment. Jane has been working hard and applying what she had learnt from the program in her daily work.

"I am glad that now I am able to work and provide for myself, I am also able to support my family at home. I am currently saving some of the money to join university for part time studies, “Jane says.

Since our last report: We have also been able to:

1. Mentor 500 youths weekly through the school Mentorship program.

2. Provide monthly sanitary towels to 250 girls who cannot afford.

3. Host Mentrual Hygiene Day with 300 girls and provided information on sexual reproductive health.

4. Support two youths to start their own businesses. They can now sustain themselves.

Meet Laura Musavi

In Kibera, the largest urban slum in sub-sahara Africa. Access to resources and information is hard especially to students who come from poor families. It is estimated that a family of 5 leave under 1 dollar a day. Here is Laura's story

"I am Laurah Musavi Waituka. I am 19 years old and the fourth born in a family of nine. I was brought up in Nairobi at Gatwekera, Kibera by both parents. I did my Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education in 2016 at New Langata Secondary School. My parents were forced to go an extra mile in order to meet our needs; my father worked as a shoe shiner while my mother did some washing for the rich. Sometimes, I could walk out of school to fetch water for people so as to raise money which I saved for my school fees. At some point, I could be so much hurt and disappointed watching my schoolmates go to school but their was one thought that cheered me, that one day I will achieve my dream, Education, because I know in whom I believe, God.

I joined Garden of hope Foundation club in 2014 when they first came to my former school. I was motivated by the fact that they could listen to me and offer counseling sessions, I decided to be committed and the following year the club members chose me as their leaders. Garden of hope foundation offered me an opportunity to be trained as a student leader to sharpen my leadership skills. In 2016 I was elected by the whole school as Head Girl a position I never knew I would hold.

When I graduated from High school in November 2016, I did not know what would happen next. I was not able to join University or college. The only option was for me go back and start washing clothes for Rich people in nearby estate. Garden of Hope Foundation offered me an opportunity to join the Leadership Development and Entrepreneurship program. Through the program I learnt computer skills, how to start a business, job searching, CV writing, business plan among others.

Thank you to everyone who have supported the program and Garden of Hope Foundation. My goal is to join university and pursue Journalism".
