Awa is a young girl from the village of Konzeogo forced to flee her home due to terrorist attacks in Burkina Faso. She dreams of becoming a teacher but faces the harsh reality of disrupted education and instability. This project will support 500 girls like Awa by covering their school tuition, providing school kits and supplies, and offering emotional support. By supporting their education, we aim to give these girls a chance to rebuild their lives and secure a brighter future.
Awa's story is not unique. Terrorist attacks in Burkina Faso has forced over 2 million people to flee their homes, resulting in a significant increase in the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs). For the 2023-2024 academic year, UNICEF reported that at least 1 in 4 schools remain shut due to ongoing violence and insecurity in parts of the country. As a result, an estimated one million children are out of school and exposed to many threats. Among the most vulnerable are young girls.
Smiling World will empower these girls like Awa through a comprehensive educational support system. We will support their school tuition, their school kits and supplies. Additionally, we will implement a holistic approach that includes academic tutoring, extracurricular activities, and emotional support programs. Our team will work with local schools and community leaders to create a nurturing and stable learning environment.
By enabling 500 girls to return to school, we are investing in the future of Burkina Faso. Educated girls are more likely to break the cycle of poverty by securing better job opportunities, contribute positively to their communities and the country's development, and raise healthier and more educated families, creating a ripple effect for future generations. Our project will transform the lives of these girls, giving them hope and the tools they need to build a better future.
