Tulsi : Back to Learning with Fun

By Hitesh Pandya | Managing Trustee

Tulsi studyin in HCC
Tulsi studyin in HCC

“Tulsi, why didn’t you come to class last week?” asked the teacher to 8-year-old Tulsi.

Tulsi is a resident of Bavriwas slum area of Jamnagar. She attends the Happy Children Center classes and enjoys learning there with her teacher. But sometimes her parents engage her in domestic work, due to which she is unable to attend the classes. When we found out about this, we contacted her parents and persuaded them, talked to them about the benefits of education. We asked Tulsi to tell her parents about what she learns at HCC and how she enjoys herself there. Her parents now let her attend HCC classes regularly. Tulsi is happy and so are her parents.

Jamnagar is home to 30,000 children like Tulsi. They live in slum areas and are often subjected to child labour. We aim to help these children by providing them with opportunities to learn and grow through our projects Day Care Center and Happy Children Center.

The children of rag pickers, beggars, labourers in slum areas lack proper care and nourishment due to lack of attention given to them. Often the burden of childcare falls on the girl child in the family. Day Care Centers aim to reduce this burden on the mothers and girl children of the family and provide children below the age of 3 years with a good environment for development. It also aims to enhance the parents’ capabilities to look after their children’s mental health and psycho-social stimulation through the effective parenting programs.

Currently we have one Day Care Center catering to around 60 children. These children are dropped off by their parents in the morning at 9 am. The children are engaged in a variety of activities throughout the day and learn through them.  These children are provided with a nutritious breakfast, lunch and evening snacks. They are picked up by their parents in the evening as they return from their work.

You can help us care for these children better by donating to our cause. These donations will go towards providing the children with nutritious and healthy food and help the children grow and develop better

Many children are out of school or have dropped out, some attend Government schools where education is of poor quality. Happy Children Center is a project under which we conduct after-school classes for these children. The center works towards building good moral values, improving health and hygiene awareness and provides a positive learning environment to the children between the ages 6 and 14 years.

Currently we have established three Happy Children Centers in three different slum areas of Jamnagar, each catering to around 50 students. Classes are conducted from 5pm to 7pm and individual attention is provided to each student. They are helped with the same syllabus that they learn in school but though models and activities. The main objective of HCC is ‘Learning With Fun’.

Two of these centers are held in open spaces due to lack of sufficient funds. You can help us to establish better infrastructure in these centers by donating to our cause. Funds can also be donated to support the education needs of the children, by providing them with stationary and tools for learning better.

Help us educate children!

Thank You!
