Children are happy attending the school
Children are happy attending the school

Slums are breading ground of all kinds of anti-socials and drugs. Children very easily fall prey into the trap of anti-socials if they are out of school. Ruchika recognizes the fact that education is the only catalyst which can change the lives of these children and society at large.

Kalaraput is one of these slums situated in Bhubaneswar close to railway line. This is a tribal populated slum where many a children are engaged in labour sector, they support their parents in supplementing the family income. Majority of the adults and children take Handia (a kind of local wine) made out of rotten rice and are addicted to it.  Many children also get engaged in drug peddling.

The Remedial teacher of Ruchika Social Service Organisation, Ms. Suchitra Nayak identified seven children in the age group of 6 to 13 years who were out of school because of lack of interest of their parents. As they were out of school without any adult control during the day time they were exposed to drugs, alcohol and sex.The parents were not at all ready to send them to school.

Suchitra visited their families several times and provided counseling. After several sessions, the parents were convinced and enrolled all the seven children into the Veera Surendra Sai UGUP School this July.  Suchitra also counseled the children and explained them about the benefits of education and consequence of not attending the school. The School Head Mistress was very supportive and also enrolled the children in their age appropriate classes.

Now Suchitra has taken the responsibility to provide them before and after school remedial coaching which will enable them to enhance their academic proficiency at par with their counterpart. She has planned the work for a year time to provide them special coaching to enable them to cope up in the school. She visits their families mostly everyday and counsels the parents to ensure regular schooling of the children. The children say we are happy and proud to go to the school.

Ruchika provides remedial education support to 80 slums and over 180 teachers provide support to more than 3,000 children everyday.
