This project will enroll and educate 300 out of school children at risk of being initiated into negative cultural practices; cattle rustling, Female Genital Mutilation and early forced marriages in Akoret. It will build permanent classrooms and dormitories, provide up to standard desks, books, uniforms, nutritious meals, clean drinking water, facilitate tree planting, school gardens and community sensitization forums on long term impacts of education to end rustling practice.
Perennial armed conflicts in West Pokot County, fueled by negative cultural practices, affects the lives of children. The boy child is initiated into cattle rustling practices from as early as 7yrs of age. 7 out of 10 people killed in a raid are children, mostly boys. On the other hand, 5 out of 10 girls are forced to undergo FGM and out of these, 3 are forced into early marriage to older men. This project will benefit 300 children who go hungry and without education due to unending conflicts.
This project will build 2 schools to provide education to the at risk child warriors in order to help them change their mindsets on negative cultural practices by teaching them new life-skills.This will help reduce early initiation of children into warriorhood, FGM and forced early marriages. The children will also be taught to share peace and change messages with their parents and neighbors. The communities around these schools will be trained on the importance of education and peace.
The 300 children who will be educated by the project will be able to break the cycle of conflict by engaging in modern careers as opposed to cattle rustling and early marriage.Building schools will continually educate more children, which will help them stay away from old practices and find new ways of providing for their families. The community will also understand the importance of education. The trees planted around the school will create a conducive environment for the children and community.
