Greeting supporters!
First of all: progress is continually being made on the volunteer teachers and mentors project
The first term of schools came to an end on 10th April 2015 and students are on April holiday till the week of May 4-8th 2015 when schools reopen for second term. Second term will last till August 8th 2015.
First term report (Jan 5th - April 10th 2015)
Final exams:198 students from four of our partner schools sat for their 2014 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education and 5 of them joined national schools, 78 joined county schools, 104 joined district schools and 11 failed to join secondary school due to lack of schools fees.
In our two partner secondary schools, 82 students sat for their 2014 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education and results released in March indicate that 2 of them scored grade A-, 8-B+, 14-B, 9-B-, 21-C+, 11-C, 7C-, 6-D+ and 4-D.
The two results show an improvement from 2013 results where the schools had fewer candidates that scored poorly in the final exams. With term 1 coming to an end, several schools reported increased scores in the tests.
Volunteers engaged
During term 1 period, 5 volunteer teachers and 5 mentors were engaged in the 6 partner schools with the aim of teaching and guiding students towards improved academic standards and constructive life. Teaching program took place every day from Monday to Friday for the 4 months period and the mentorship program placed volunteer mentors once a week to hold sessions on different topics every week. The topics covered career guidance, health issues, self-empowerment, drugs and alcohol abuse, academic issues, self-esteem, and awareness issues on sex and environment.
Because of your support, students in Ruaraka informal schools received a better education. All six schools that your funds have helped provide extra teachers reported that the volunteer teachers are working hard and easing the work load. A lot of the head teachers have said that the support given by Progressive Volunteers and driven by you has motivated the staff and students.
Plan for second Term (May 4th - August 8th 2015)
Volunteers’ engagement
Much, much more needs to be done. Thank you for joining us in this noble cause and hope you too believe in the saying ''If you educate a generation, they will reward you with peace, health, and prosperity. An educated child is more likely to secure a job, stay healthy, and contribute to their community throughout their life.'' This project positively affects the education of over 280 needy students. Helping them reach their potential and helping their communities achieve sustainable development is what drives our cause we as Progressive Volunteers!
For second term beginning early May, we intend to increase the number of engaged volunteers and mentors to 15 and increase the number of engaged partner schools from 6 to 8. This means politely requesting support for the project once again through your donation. We do appreciate your commitment and continued support to this project.
Thank you
