Summary

This project will build 5 classrooms, 4 toilets and provide books for 200 needy children most of whom are former street boys and girls, victims of rape and incest, orphans and more from extremely poor backgrounds. The classrooms will replace an old leaking iron-sheet hall that the children currently use as a classroom, the 4 toilets will supplement an only pit latrine which the children share with their volunteer teachers and books will facilitate learning.

Challenge

Hundreds of children from poor families drop out of school every year in Nairobi's Njiru settlement scheme. High cost of living has pushed the need for education to the periphery. Government's subsidized education program still demands a lot from many families who cannot even afford to put a decent meal on the table. Everyone watches helplessly as children work in quarries, scavenge dumping sites and as,for many orphans, street life beckons. As global parents we can give hope to needy children

Solution

Family Hope runs full and partial sponsorships to needy children. There are 10 girls and 10 boys who are on total sponsorship. This year 5 children who were on the verge of dropping out of school are benefiting from termly hardship fee waivers. For every 10 children we admit from an able parent, we pool a resource to keep a needy child in school. The mission is to reduce the rate of school dropouts in Njiru to near naught in the years to come. The project's capacity building initiative is handy.

Long-Term Impact

200 hundred needy children maintained in school goes a long way in taming rising numbers of street children in the larger Nairobi County. 200 useful Kenyans who would have otherwise been wasted in drug abuse and possible criminal activities are nurtured to reach their desired potential. With 200 young adults nurtured, educated and fully equipped with all the necessary skills, the long-term effect will be a remarkable reduction of poverty among many families.
