Dear Donors, Friends and Well-wishers of The Association of People with Disability (APD).
We are glad to submit to you the quarterly report of our Education Program for Children with Disability.
Thanks to GlobalGiving community for your generous support for educating the children with disability. The donation raised through GlobalGiving website helped us to provide mid-day meals, books, uniforms, healthcare, transportation, Hearing aids and special coaching supplement to children with disability. Their medical rehabilitation, an integral part of their development, is ensured through regular medical check ups, physiotherapy and use of mobility aids.
The Education Programme at APD aims at promoting inclusive education through focused institutional and district programs and networking with government agencies, NGOs, special and mainstream schools
The Shradhanjali Integrated School (SIS) of APD has 180 children on roll, for the Academic Year 2012-2013. These children are from under privileged segment .The school aims in helping these children join mainstream schools after giving the support required. This is a day school and we have two buses that pick up children every morning and drops them back home. The focus at SIS is on activity-oriented learning. The school offers a good resource center and library. Co – curricular activities like painting, quiz competitions, sports, cultural festivals, and arts and crafts ensure all round development.
Some of the major activities during the last three months are given below for your kind information.
Key Highlights for the month of September to 15 November 2014.
September 2014
September was a busy month at SIS. It started with the celebration of the Ganesh Chathurti Festival with an idol of Lord Ganesha brought to the campus and immersed in the water after 3 days after pooja. The children were taught about this festival.
There was an advocacy meeting for the parents held on 10th September which was attended by 65 parents. The meeting focused on Nirmaya renewal for children with multiple disability and enrolment as well as on pension. Another meeting for parents was held to train them on basic sign language, problems associated with hearing loss, total communication and maintenance of hearing aids.
12 teachers attended the refresher course conducted by TATA Edge to keep them motivated to provide innovative education solutions that will keep the children interested and engaged throughout the year. An assessment for wheel chair requirement was conducted on 11th September and 17 students were identified who needed wheel chairs. 2 fun activities were also held for the children with a Class trip to Lumbini garden on 17th September for 28 Nursery students who were accompanied by 4 staff and a trip for the 17 preparatory class students on 16th September to the KR Puram garden who were accompanied by 3 staff. The students thoroughly enjoyed both activities. The school closed for Dussera vacation on 29th September 2014.
October 2014
On the 8th October, a Medical camp was held and 4 children identified with epilepsy and further treatment is being provided to them. School reopened on 13th October after vacation. Sports is an integral part of the curriculum and the Sports day was held on 15th October for students from Standard I to VII. Trophies and medals were given at the end of the event by NOS CEO, Northern Trust, Mosur Saishekar, for the star performers. 20 students were identified and swimming classes were organized for these students.
Keeping with the continuous focus on overall development of the children, a painting competition was held for Speech & Hearing impaired children on 25th October and a story telling competition was held for students from Standard I to VII. On 27th October, the children celebrated Diwali in the school with sweets and fireworks.
A medical check-up was organized on 30th October for 140 students and some of the parents as well. The month came to an exciting end for the 55 students of standard V to VII as they headed to Lumbini gardens for their class trip on 31st October. They were accompanied by 6 staff.
November 2014
The first half of November has also seen a lot of activities. The month kick-started with the Karanataka Rajyotsava celebrations, on 7th November where the children participated in various cultural activities to celebrate the spirit of Karnataka. On 11th November, a meeting was organized for the parents of children from Nursery to Standard VII to discuss the academic progress of the children as well as the safety measures required.
A Dental check-up was organized for 184 students on 12th November in association with Vasan Dental Care. Children’s Day was celebrated on 14th November with great fanfare. Teachers entertained the children through various cultural programmes and the children had fun participating in the various games that were organized. Gifts and sweets were given to the children as part of the Celebration.
