Disabled children are considered outcasts by the community in this area. Many are never educated but left to beg in the streets. This is worse if they are girls, disabled and orphaned at the same time. The project will therefore provide school fees, school uniforms, nutrition, wheel chairs and learning aid materials for 20 disabled rural orphaned girls to ensure they not only access quality education but also be able to move, wear good clothes and feed.
The number of people with Disabilities in Kenya is estimated at 3.8 million. According to the Ministry of Education in its National Special Needs Education, school age going children with physical disabilities form the largest group of handicapped children in Kenya accounting for 5% of the total number of handicapped children. In this report, 33% of children with physical disabilities drop out of school due to lack of fees and other basic needs. Many end up in street to beg.
By supporting the girls to be in school, they will acquire the necessary educational and personal development skills. These will make them have employ ability skills as well a life skills to manage the competitive world. Once basic needs of these children are taken care of, they will concentrate on their education. They will be able to feed, wear descent uniform, access different places using tri-cycle and access books and other necessary stationery for their education.
The project will educate 50 disabled rural orphaned girls to realize their dreams in life and be leading examples to others. This project once successful, will attract more donors who will support the programme to continue supporting other children in need. The aim of the project is to support 500 disabled children.
