Catching up with the African Angels

Qhayiya: Making us Proud
Qhayiya: Making us Proud

Our August newsletter is out there. We report on our membership of the Green Light Movement and share our successes in cross-country and academics; share The Principal's outing which is one of the ways we reward children who get the most merits in each class, and launch our Little by Little campaign to upgrade our library.

We are very excited to be able to announce that another of our Grade 7 children has been accepted into the Allan Grey Orbis Foundation High School Scholarship scheme.

We are so proud of Qhayiya, she has worked hard, and taken advantage of the excellent schooling offered during her time at African Angels. Qhayiya is one of only 41 candidates selected from over 5347 grade 7 learners who applied across South Africa.

Congratulations to Qhayiya, her sponsors and all the staff at African Angels for creating this opportunity for a better future

The next big news is our new GlobalGiving campaign.

81% of grade 4 learners in South Africa are incapable of reading for meaning in any language (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study 2021). Literacy is a key focus at African Angels and our aim is to get 100% of our Grade 4's reading for meaning by the end of Grade 4. We do have a library but it shares a space with our staff room which is not ideal.

Our objective is to create a quiet space where our children can read in comfort, research for their projects or simply sit quietly to reflect. We aim to renovate an existing building into a dedicated library, but we need your help. Please help us encourage 65 people to each donate $20 during the GlobalGiving Little by Little campaign which will run from 18-22 September. If we achieve this, we will have raised enough money to complete the refurbishment of the library and media centre.

This fully stocked library, with a quiet, comfortable reading corner and two connected computers will provide the environment for children to escape into a word of fantasy, or to research for school projects. More time spent with books and the outside world will translate into a broader knowledge of the world and the opportunities available for those who work hard and exhibit determination and tenacity.

Please share this link to our GlobalGiving campaign with friends, family and colleagues between the 18-22 September and let them know that their little acts of kindness can combine to make a big impact in the lives of the African Angels School children, their family and their community!
