Chicuchas Wasi school for poor indigenous girls in Cusco exists because YOU cared enough to make educating 105 girls your concern and priority. You stood by us in 1987 when we opened an emergency shelter for the 7,8 to 12 year olds sleeping huddled in piles on cold cement streets and in doorways, stealing food, and worse. We learned so much from the stories these amazing children told us and decided we could do something to stem child abandonment. In 1997 YOU were there standing beside Ruth and I when we went against the local custom and belief and began to offer free education to the very girls that would too soon be mothers and the most likely to abandon their babies if left uneducated.
Today, September 19, 2014 celebrates 27 years since Ronald, the first child to receive emergency shelter and nursing care after a knife wound to his arm while being robbed by another child. From that start in1987, today CW is educating girls to be able to survive economically and be financially independent mothers one day and strong leaders for a future with equality for indigenous girls and women in Cusco.
There was so much more along the way, but you know this story. Many of you were there with us and gave us the courage and strength to dare to challenge the Andean belief that girls don't matter.
YOU are the loyal supporters and donors of our 27 year history fighting for the basic rights of indigenous children and providing the love, education and support they must have for a life out of poverty and oppression.
Education of GIRLS is urgent!
YOU are our heros.
YOU help us empower 105 girls!
THANK YOU!!
