Each March begins a new school year in Cusco and when CW students receive their annual medical and dental exams. During their 3 months vacation at home, student nutrition suffered severely, our poor parents cannot afford quality food for their families. The results were shocking. One third of our girls were severely anemic and the rest were borderline anemic. We were advised by the medical team to add animal protein and vitamins to our hot meal program immediately and we did. Today our girls are healthy again.
Ruth created a new plan to supply our kitchen with the ingredients needed for the new diet to keep our growing girls healthy and learning. The school garden grew, adding 24 chickens, guinea pigs and 2 sheep to supply our kitchen for the high protein meal served daily to 105 students. Gardening for nutrition is part of the school curriculum now and the girls get their hands in the garden and feed the animals. The grounds keeper actually keeps the garden and animals but the girls are learning they can grow quality food for better health.
Malnutrition in childhood causes irreversible damage.
Then six weeks ago it became obvious that more than the usual few arriving hungry each morning had grown to half of the student body. Ruth increased the oatmeal and bread breakfast for the students needing to eat and classes continued without a fuss. Our students are doing well again. Poverty is tough on all but worse on the innocent and helpless ones.
Chicuchas Wasi school for girls is an evolving project and we keep our eyes open to address issues before they become a serious problem.
