Among children not attending school there are twice as many girls as boys. Offering girls basic education is one sure way of giving them much greater power of enabling them to make genuine choices of leading a healthier and happier life.
In a workshop with the girls group, one exercise was to list down the needs children experience in their lives. The top list of needs was on education that included school fess, uniforms, school bags and note books as this was sighted as an expense by the poor parents to stop girls from schooling. As most of the children come from widow-headed or grand-parent headed families continuing schooling is a challenge as these families are dependent on occasional jobs and the pressure to get girls married after they complete class 10 or 12.
For Kalpana, her mother a widow makes a living from daily wage work as a tea-provider in a construction project, or plucking weeds in the agriculture field. As these jobs are seasonal, there is no regular income. Though these children are going to government school, the cost incurred for uniforms, school bags, note books are a burden to the families.
Understanding the ground level need, Buds of Christ made it an ongoing project to support and empower orphan girls from rural areas by providing them with the educational support that reduces the pressure upon the poor widow mother and encourage girls to go to school with great enthusiasm.
It was a moment of great joy for al the girl children at Buds of Christ when School uniforms, bags and notebooks were distributed, with the support of donors from GlobalGiving and wellwishers of Buds of Christ. We extend to you our sincere thanks in helping us making the impact in the lives of orphan girls
